Rob and Mari go to White Castle

We're back from our trip... as always, it's fun to go back East and visit with friends and family. But for some reason, our trips always seem to be organized around food. Warning: lots of images to follow!

We like to fly Jet Blue because of Long Beach airport and the TV's. We were able to watch Project Runway on the way there.

Our first day we got in and went into Manhattan. The weather was beautiful and in the 50's. We stopped by Habu Textiles for a quick look around, and then we headed to the Lower East Side to the Doughnut Plant. Our friend Huay recommended it from her last trip.

This is their Valhrona Chocolate Donut. Tasty!

Even better was their raspberry filled jelly donut. How do you get the jelly into a square donut with a hole in the middle?

Yummy!

They were filming the Andy Milonakis show (I've never heard of the show but Rob knew what it was) next door to the donut shop.

Then we walked over the Brooklyn Bridge

to Jacques Torres Chocolate store.

Where we got the most decadent hot chocolate imaginable. It's just what I thought the chocolate river would taste like in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

We also met up with Rob's friend Claudia for dinner and saw Spamalot, which was SO funny. I only managed to wear two knitted items that day.

The next day we went to Rob's sister Cindy's house to celebrate her birthday.

The cake Rob made for her, which was a devil's food cake with a layer of mint chocolate chip ice cream, covered in Cool Whip - a traditional family favorite.

Rob having fun with his nieces.

We drove down to DC with Rob's dad. We managed to eat brunch one day at our favorite Cajun restaurant.

They have the best beignets and cafe au laits.

As well as some very tasty variations on Eggs Benedict.

We also managed to see a bunch of friends all at once. The highlight was seeing Lucy, our friend's 6 month old baby.

What a cutie!

Rob's sister Kathi got a very cute cockapoo puppy named Maggie.

Our last day we went trolled around DC, ate at Pizzaria Paradiso (sorry, no photos!) and I managed to wear 3 knitted items, the most of the trip.

While we were at the Mall we visited the National Musuem of the American Indian, which was finished since we lived in DC.

Rob isn't crazy about the exterior but the inside is very nice and we only had time to quickly look through the exhibits. We'll spend more time there on our next visit.

So, what about White Castle? I have never had White Castle, I only know it through various pop culture references. So when Rob said he had a craving, I agreed to go.

We got 10 burgers and I ate three. Yep, I don't get it. They were slimy and pretty unappealing. I think I kept eating them because I thought the first two were a mistake. I can guarantee this will not be a future stop on our annual trips to the east coast.

I love all the photos! Food, knitted garments, friends and family; all via Jet Blue! What more could you want? :) I'm so glad you had fun.

I like to refer to white castle burgers as murder burgers. The first and last time I had white castle was maybe 15 years ago. A repeat visit was not neccessary. I wish yiou would have mentioned that on the blog before you ate them, we could have spared your stomach.

On another note I love to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, you had great weather when you came, you may have been blown off it on a day like today,

What, no cupcakes? =) Looks like fun though. White Castle must be one of those 1am cravings after you've been out drinking. I love Jetblue too! Those TVs are awesome. Did you get any yarn?

I think I just gained weight reading your post (it might have been the pecan pie I was eating while I read). Yeah, White Castle burgers are only good if you're wasted and it's 2 am. And even then they're not really good.

found you via sweet georgia... I am on a diet, so all those pictures made me go... groan! Looks like a fab break though. And nice knits too.

mmmmm, doughnuts. Looks like you had such a great time. And I LOVE the "how many knits can I wear at once."

I'm glad you guys had fun. Seeing all those food places again brought back memories. And the cajun restaurant. I'm jealous. I'll let Chris know that you guys went to White Castle. One of his favorite places in St. Louis. I know what you mean about the burgers.

White Castles.... you either love 'em or hate 'em. No-one falls in between.

^^^I agree with the above statement. Some people crave them and would kill to get to White Castle (like the movie), others hate them, and not much in between. White Castle is the oldest (first) fast food restaurant and is known as the creator of American cuisine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Castle_(restaurant)#History
They have almost a cult following. I love'em, the wife hates 'em!
