Crafting through the generations

I'm happy to say that my quilt sandwich has been created and basted together...

...with a little help (distraction? irritation?) from Unki.

I've been thinking about crafting and its place in my family, especially while making this quilt. I could buy a quilt for probably less money (and definitely less effort!) but I can't put a price on the satisfaction and joy of crafting. My mom used to make the cutest clothes for my sisters and me, and I would like to do the same if we ever have kids.

When it comes to knitting/crocheting, my love definitely comes from my grandmother. I have memories of her with yarn, but I can't remember specific projects she made. Unfortunately, she passed away almost 5 years ago, but I did hold on to one of her beautiful crocheted sweaters.

It fits me well and I'll try to take a picture of it on, but this is one sweater that I'm happy to leave in the closet - it's part of our family's crafting history that I cherish.

I think you've made a good point about hand-made items. It's not so much that we make them to save money or because they're better than items we could buy; we make them because of the enjoyment we get from the process of creation and because of the memories they inspire as we're crafting.

Your grandmother's sweater is really exquisite.

By the way, have you considered naming it the Unki Paw Quilt?

Everything is so beautiful. That's nice that you have one of Obachan's sweater's.
